i wanted to try out making some dsl files. but i have no idea what i want to do. no experience. and no idea where i would download the damn things >.<

then theres apt-get but that doesnt give a list of software does it? >.<

Go to  http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages  and drill down on stable, testing or unstable and look at a package group for something that might interest you, such as electronics, then pick a prog, then click the button for architecture (i.e. i386).  Then you have to pick a download mirror and "You've got Deb."  Or if there is a program that you have found that interests you on sourceforge.net or freshmeat.net you might try that.

that's where the beauty is in apt it will tell you what else you need, or if you enable synaptic you have a graphical front end for it if there are lots of dependancies then you may need to experiment with the sources list to locate them all.....
