Coming from windows, I expected the program to run some sort of Linux equivalent to install shield, but I didn’t know it just extracted the file silently.

It seems the firefox browser I have in windows doesn’t like me to download more than one file at once. That explains the amount of corrupted downloads I got :|

I got doom and znes working, too bad I lost my roms when I lost xp, I have to search for the back up cd :)

pre-compiled programs are generally just archives.  Windows programs are often built with programs that give you a nice gui from which to choose where yo want the archive extracted, and then it may add some registry settings and miscellaneous other stuff.  It's my assumption that people who develop packages for Linux don't want to bother with the extra hooplah...if you want to install a program specifically tailored to your needs, compiling is the way to go.

On DSL, we have a handy script which extracts the archive and maybe adds a menu item....nothing more is really necessary.  It would be nice, though, if it had a verbose option so you could see exactly what's being installed.  Is this an option?

In windows one problem I have is programs installing themselves and after you install them not frmoving all traces of themselves, example registy keys.

And making an installer app was never a big deal to me just use nullsoft or something, I guess I have to get used to doing everything myself in linux.

Ain't it great? :D

One good thing about having to manually deal with a lot of things another OS might do for you is that you have all the control.
But truthfully, most distros don't force you to do everything manually...there are gui tools or scripts available that will relieve you of a lot of tedious work.  What's even better, though, is Bash.  You can do anything with a well-written shell script...unlike the scripting capabilities of some operating systems....

FYI,

If the DSL package is a large one, it could take some time for it to load.

Usually I try and load them after downloading the file to my home directory. Then use the "myDSL" button in Emelfm to install the DSL extension.

Sometimes it will get busy for a while and eventually you will see some sort of message in the "results" window at the bottom of the Emelfm program window. This is how I know when the install is complete.
