these directories are part of the root filesystem and are not stored in the /ramdisk

The root filesystem has a limited amount of available space.

So if you put too much stuff inside /etc, then you will run out of space in your root filesystem.

Small text configuration files are fine, but if you are trying to add applications to /etc in an effort to avoid running mkwritable then "bad things" can happen.

OH!...I see what you're saying.  I forgot that I had mentioned /etc being writeable. :p

I suppose that's mainly just so you can make some edits to existing files if necessary.
