Here's a strange problem I recently had with DSL. I have a CD with samba.dsl and gcombust.dsl extensions in the root directory. I booted DSL on a PC with a CD and DVD drive. On the first drive extensions loaded properly, but when booting on the second they were not seen nor loaded. I suppose that DSL sees extensions only when booting from the first CD / DVD drive enumerated by the BIOS. I am correct? Or maybe it is due to some strange combination of hardware on which I tested it.
