While it's possible to change the kernel in dsl I'm not sure it's recommended. Rebuilding the kernel in a Knoppix-based distro can be a pain in the ar**. Also, dsl has been put together to work specifically with the supplied kernel (knoppix 2.4.26). Changing the kernel may lead to unforeseen consequences.
Debian (for eg) is very easy to upgrade official kernel images with - no rebuilding needed - try that if you want to fiddle with different kernels.
