First: Can I create a USB installation that does not affect the data currently on my drive? Without formatting or partitioning or anything like that?

Second: What exactly is "current.iso"?

The Data on your Hard Disk will not be touched, but if you install DSL from the LiveCD, your USB-Drive will be formatted.

There is a chance of avoiding it, if you install it via Windows.
Just see this WEbSite. Here everything is explained. It is a little bit more complicated but also this works fine!
