Hello im new to linux and I want to start learning
I thought the best way to learn is to actually have a distro and not read it from some book
So.. I started looking round for cool distros.
and a distro not to install in my hdd because Im not the only person using this pc
So I came up with DSL and since I have a Kingston DataTraveler 2 with 512 mb I thought it'd be cool to install it here..
But I have some problems..
1)-My pc cant burn cds..(even though its a cd-rw/dvd drive..)
2)-My pc isnt a pc its a notebook so it has no floppy drive...
3)No money for and external hdd/writer/anything I have to buy
4)Its not all that new.. probably 3-4 years(hp pavilion zt1135(bought it used))
5)I have no Idea if it can boot from usb, never tried it

OK so ive been looking around a bit in the forums and theres a bunch of ways to make the usb bootable but they require to have the DSL live-cd(witch I cant burn...)
or a floppy(Witch I dont have,floppies or drive)

So I was wondering If theres a way to install it from windows and restart and boom! usb DSL happiness :D

well waiting for a responce from anyone
p.s. If it doesnt work.. I have a live ubuntu cd so maybe that has an option to install to usb..

well crossing my fingers :D

I don't know of a way to actually install DSL from a USB because the USB will not 'autorun' like a CD...

However, you could try the embedded version of DSL that can be downloaded as a zipped file and either unzipped to an USB drive or directly to your hard drive and then click on the 'dsl-windows.bat' file. The downside of this method is if your CPU is slower than around 800MHz it will probably be intolerable to use in this configuration.

Your other option would be to purchase a DSL CD from the DSL store, which is less than $10 (including shipping) if you live in the US.

No, I am not affliated with DSL and they don't pay me to recommend them. I personally have bought an USB embedded version, CD and the DSL book and am happy with all three!

Hope this helps,

Well Ill probably just ask my friend to burn the dsl cd in his pc and the ill buy it/take it from him.

As for booting from the usb directly looks like my bios doesnt support it... only cd, floppy, Lan, and Hdd...

well ill check out the enbedded version :)

the bad thing is that my pc is onnly 1,2ghz...
well thanks for the help and Ill see if I can get the cd/enbedded version..
