Hi all -

I'm having the following problem (and not just when I'm trying to boot from USB):

When I try and boot (either from CD or USB Key), DSL crashes and hangs during the 'checking for USB' segment if I leave a USB key in the drive.  It boots properly if there's nothing connected.

I have tried this both with two different USB keys (one with DSL installed, the other without) and I get the same problem.

If I disconnect them the boot works properly, which is how I managed to install the USB Key (booted from CD, plugged in the drive when DSL is up and used the apps->tools method).

This would be OK, except I want to be able to boot from the USB key, and obviously I can't do that without it being connected!  If I try the nousb switch then it doens't find the KNOPPIX filesystem (not surprising really).  'fromusb' doesn't help either...

Please note that this is not specifically a problem with booting, but I didn't know where else to post it!  Thx.

Ah.... as always it's the last thing I try that works.

I switched the support of the USB driver from Full Speed down to High Speed (ie USB 2.0 to 1.1) and it works.

Can't seem to access the web, but that's another story.....

How many usb ports does the machine have?
Usually rear ports work better than front. Try a different port.
May possibly be a very slow to register usb bus.
Does waitusb option help?

Ok, what is the command line to lower USB from 2.0 to 1.1?

I have a few systems I use a pen and DSL, and it boots fine on most, but some systems give me the cannot find knoppix error.  Figured I would try the USB trick....
