I downloaded dsl, put on cd, rebooted, installed to usb pendrive, rebooted ALL OK
Went into beaver wrote a test document and saved it to a new folder called peter.
Rebooted lo and behold peter and the document still there.
So to satisfy my curiosity where the heck is this data kept, I have searched all ove the usb pen to no avail.

Where did you create the folder "peter"?  If it was in /home/dsl, it's likely that it was backed up.  See if there is a file in the root of the pendrive called "backup.tar.gz".

Yes ther is a backup.tar.gz and it contains a copy of the text file in /home/dsl/test but no trace of the folder peter. Is ther anyway of pointing /home at another partition on the pen drive so that it is maintained on the pen drive in real time.
