Your question is not stupid. Simply no one has the answer at the moment. I posted twice so far but no answer, that doesn't mean my questions are stupid ( or are they?).
About the kernel, the 2.6 is considerably bigger and has a lot of dependencies. I guess: if you installed DSL on the hard drive and the upgraded to apt-get then you could upgrade the kernel yourself, but on embedded it'd be a pain the bottom.
Besides, the rule is, don't mess with the kernel if not absolutely necessary...
