OK, I think I've searched this forum and the wiki for just about every tip. First I was going to try and create a FAT or FAT32 partition on the hard drive and use the smbclient command line as shown in the "getting started with DLS" page showed. Couldn't do that (LOOONNGGGG story, but I tried everything short of spending money on Partition Magic or similar software).
Then I tried "Saving files in DSL Embedded on Pen Drive". These tips didn't work either.
I thought about setting up an FTP sever or an SSH sever (in windows or with cgywin), but those would be detected by the scans for unapproved software and I can't QUITE justify the need for those applications. I can't install FTP and uninstall FTP everytime I want to run DSL off my USB drive; kinda defeats the purpose.
Then I found "How to transfer files between Embedded and host Windows system" off the wiki. This was most promising. However, the smbclient window also has a Domain entry and it won't let me leave that blank. Since I am running this on a stand-alone machine logged into the local account, I don't have a domain. I entered the machine name into this box, but when I do that, I get a blue window that spits out one or two lines of text and then closed too fast for me to read what the text says.
What I really want to do is copy some .tar files from my hard drive to the DSL environment, unpack them, compile them and run them in DSL. IOW, open notebook, plug into random network, start DSL off my USB drive, get tar files, load applications, run applications, save data somewhere, stop DSL, have access to data in Windows.
Possible?
Can I use a second USB drive? Will DSL detect and mount that?
