I totally agree with a stripped-down DSL. The DSL core could be console utilities, X, etc, and you could add everything else in as extra packages. Maybe a more modular system.

Using the DSL remastering process mentioned in these forums (search for keyword remastering), it should be possible to make a stripped down version of DSL yourself.
