xft isn't a font server, as far as i know...it's an extension to xfree86/xorg which helps to display special features of certain font types.
Of course if i'm wrong i'll appreciate being corrected....fonts are an annoying thing to work with, and mainly i just stick with the good ol bitmaps.
As for the original post, I think there are already too many fonts in DSL. Most are kinda ugly and i never use more than a few of them. In my opinion it would be nice to have built-in support for additional fonts without actually including them....the user could pick whatever fonts or font sets he wants from mydsl, and the base system would have only a handful of the most vital faces. However, I have no idea how much room this support would require, if it were to include freetype/opentype.
