I stumbled across upx-ucl today while searching for a way to stick apache/php (both WinNT and linux versions, so I can work on my website-to-be on any Win2k/XP machine, or boot from a dsl disc and work from a (normally) Win95/98/ME box) on my 16M pen-drive.  UPX is an executable compressor for both Win32 and linux/368 programs.

It may not be much, but applying upx to the ELF contents of the .dsl files would likely help out those low ram users with getting an extension or two more on their machines.

I posted another bit about UPX over here
