what id like to see is full CF media support (as an IDE drive), so to get as much life as possible out of the card.

By reading the card and putting system files into a ram drive, then using this as the main drive OS (this would run more like a normal CD-boot im guessing),  but also allow an option to write back configuration and settings (possibally apps) back to the card, but otherwise only using the card to copy the OS into a ram drive, and ONLY writeing back to CF, when the user opts to do so.

A frugal install to a cf does exactly what you describe ..
It can load the entire OS into ramspace with the toram option during bootup.
Then you only write to it when YOU choose.
Operating it as a true HD severly limits it's lifespan..
Nevertheless, it boots and operates as HDA1 on your ide bus using a cf to ide adapter..
