A minor quest of mine from a few months ago was that I wanted to find some card games for DSL that would be a good fit for the distro (small and light).

Unfortunately, most card games require a bunch of heavy dependencies like GNOME or KDE or something else that is beyond the scope of DSL.

While recently poking around in Synaptic, I could not help but notice that there is a new (old) candidate that fits the bill.

In the Debian stable (default) sources.list there is a game called ace-of-penguins

This game suite used to be too big for DSL because it had additional dependencies that drove the size up.

However, with DSL 0.6.x  all depenendcies are now satisfied with the built-in DSL libraries. Woo-hoo!

Bottom line. Here is a brief instruction on how to create a slimmed down ace-of-penguins installation which might be worth adding to a future version of DSL.

My stripped down ace-of-penguins includes: freecell, golf, minesweeper, solitaire and taipei (Mahjongg)

Total Size for games uncompressed: 159.80 KB
Total Size for games compressed (tar.gz): 83.44KB

First, install the Debian stable ace-of-penguins package and then flush your apt-cache.

Then remove the following files:

usr/games/ace_canfield
usr/games/ace_mastermind
usr/games/ace_merlin
usr/games/ace_pegged
usr/games/ace_taipedit
usr/games/ace_thornq

usr/lib/menu/ace-of-penguins
