I can now right click on a picture in a directory
and select View Pictures in Dir
in the Users menu

that way I can look at any picture by clicking the icon
and cycle through the pictures by pressing the spacebar

Or if you prefer, you can use the Rox Filer extension and set "Use thumbnails" to ON.  Then whenever you encounter a folder that contains image files the thumbnails will appear inside the Rox file manager itself, kinda like Windows XP explorer or Endeavor Mark II.
