I see no reason why it can't be made, but why not create take the CDROM image, convert it to initrd image (large one, but I've seen 19-20MB images before), and use it for TFTP/PXE boot using it? Even better, create a smart startup script that can automatically mount a remote NFS/SMB /home directory and even better, get the passwd/shadow/group from there.
If anyone have any ideas, I'll be happy to contribute some free time.
