Perhaps a script where you could automagicly edit the lilo.conf's vga line. Like xsetup.sh but it would be fbsetup.sh. This would allow an easier interface for those that aren't too good at the console. And Also, perhaps a 'template' version of DSL.

Found a better and smaller Audio Volume Control/Mixer application than aumix. I think this one is perfect for DSL.

Author's Name of the program: Wmixer 3.0
Debian Package Name: 'wmix' (NOT 'wmixer'. 'wmmixer' is a completely different program and not as good in my opinion)
Debian Package Size: 24.9k compressed, 90.1k uncompressed
Size of just the binary file only (/usr/X11R6/bin/wmix): 43.5k
Additional dependencies needed: NONE

This progam is a little Mixer/Volume control dockapp that plugs into the blackbox/fluxbox 'slit' window (where the Mount.App is displayed)

It has some really neat features:
Double-click on the Volume Control to MUTE/UNMUTE the sound.

Hover your mouse pointer over the dockapp and use the Mouse scroll wheel to increase or decrease the volume by scrolling up or down.
Non scollwheel equipped mice can change the volume by clicking on the volume control and dragging it up or down.

When you change the volume level, it is momentarily displayed on your desktop as a segmented bar graph that looks exactly like the On-Screen volume display from a typical television set.

You can toggle and also change the volume level for all types of sound sources besides just the master volume level.

You can set the default sound source for your audio recording programs.

In addition to volume, you can also adjust the balance (Left vs. Right).

I'm all for adding the 2.6 kernel. I don't know about size comparisons, but the interface response speedup is definitely good. Also, ALSA just might get my laptop's sound card working by default -- I get beeps only right now, even though my laptop has speakers and an ESS card. I'm thinking about trying to get ALSA on the laptop tho to see if I can get sound. It's a pain, though, because I can't get Internet access to the laptop. Oh well...

John, could you offer a guideline as to package sizes you would consider manageable?

I would like to use jpilot as a PIM - even standalone, if a handheld connection can't be done.
