John,
Have you ever tried out the rox-filer file manager?
It is a small, fast, easy-to-use and sophisticated file manager that runs well on older hardware. In addition to a file manager, it also performs the function of a "desktop icon" tool and a thumbnail picture browser.
I don't know how much space is used in Debian, but the Peanut Linux *.rpm is 358k + the baseutils *.rpm is 115k = total 473k (Including Postscipt documentation)
The "pinboard" function is the desktop icon tool in rox-filer. Rox also supports file association with automatic application launching, VFS support (so you can browse inside .gz files with the file manager), drag and drop support, automatic refreshing of the folder contents, and sophisticated file search tool ( IE: Give me all files that were modified in the last 2 days and are smaller than 1MB in size and begin with the letter 'h').
Check it out and see if you would like to add it to DSL. You could replace the existing file manager and desktop icon tool with this program, if needed.

PS: Thank you for creating such a small but powerful distribution. I am amazed by how much performance that you have squeezed into such a small package.
