Those "old" apps in DSL have been hacked so they resemble the original. They are perfect for what this distribution is designed for. They work extremely well, so I can live with them quite easily. Why update if the update is not better? Also, if you feel the need for the latest and greatest, then there are plenty of choices out there for you. Probably someone is already producing exactly what you are looking for. That's the beauty of open source. Finally, the extentions (.uci and .dsl) are user contributed. That means that someone saw a need and met it. You have the right and freedom to do the same thing if you see a need. There are instructions for making the extentions in the Wiki.
