How about something for the kids?

A dsl with simple paint, games, edu stuff for little kids to play with on old pc's or laptops, or on important pc's that you don't really want them to get onto and mess up. Limited useage, and controlled internet access? Tweens can still do internet mail and homework, saving files to usb pen drives for school.

If anybody know of a distro like this, please please please show me the way.  Most live cd's are still a threat to my system, and not simple enough.  Need something with an almost sponge-bob quality to the menu, if you know what i mean. (i prefer Sesame Street, but, anything to make the kids happy).

what do you think?[B]

Teach yourself how to remaster Knoppix and you can do these things yourself using DSL or any other Knoppix-based distro as a base. I've done similar things to what you are describing for my kids at home.

Good luck

Is there perhaps a simple way to disable mounting of harddrives?  Then they couldn't mess up your system.  Though you'd want to be able to mount CDs and USBs.

Question, how exactly are livecd's a threat to your system? They don't, by design, touch your hard drive.

The only threat I can think of would be a willfull act of mounting a drive and rm -rf'ing it, and there you'd certainly have to mean it.

As for "kiddie distros", perhaps it's a simple matter of finding a theme and tools that have the appropriate amount of eye candy. I saw a menuing system called pogo (search the forums for it) that looked like it might make for an appropriately whiz-bang interface with a bit of tweaking.
