I ordered a Damn Small Machine Thanksgiving Weekend and it just arrived over the weekend - it's the one with the 512 Flash drive,256 meg RAM and version 2.0 of the OS - of course, now 2.1 has been released, and I'd like to upgrade, but I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing, and I've searched the forums for hours (with no luck) I used to understand things better than I do now, but thanks to my disability and my doctor's failed attempts at  better living through chemistry, I have the attention span of a gnat - at least when I destroyed the mini-ITX DSL system I bought last year I could pull out the CF card, but since I've never seen anything like the insides of this nano; if someone could point me to a place that shows how to upgrade the OS, without going off into 6 different tangents and 4 threads which have nothing to do with the question, I would be ever so grateful.  I was really just hoping that this one thing in my life would just work...

No need to take it apart to upgrade!  The easy way to upgrade is via a USB pen  drive.  You should be able to grab yourself a pen drive, use the DSM to install DSL onto the pen, and then use the pen to install the upgraded DSL.

First step is to download 2.1b, then use that image to install 2.1b onto your pen drive.

Second step is to boot from your pen drive and then run the frugal-lilo script to update your IDE flash drive.

John,
I am puzzled.  I decided to upgrade my brand new DSM to 2.1b.  I downloaded the ISO, used the tool to install (using the upgrade option)  onto hdd pendrive and rebooted to the pen.  When up on the pendrive I noticed that the FluxBox Slit is completely different with what seems to be a background display and separate mounter and Workspace display.

I then used the tool to install (again selecting upgrade when asked) to hda1.

When I reboot the slit is gone.  All I have is the workspace manager.

Have you any idea what is happening?  I had/have no customizations at this point, only backed up user values - even there the only thing I changed were bookmarks in Firefox.

Thanks,
Dave
