Just got my bargain fanless mini-itx barebones.  Too cool!
Sticking with the bargain theme, I ordered a .5GB DDR DIMM from the cheapest commercial Ebay seller I could find.  That seems to have been a big mistake.  The DIMM arrived DOA. :-(   Now the seller is dragging his feet about making it right.  After I emailed a link to the page in the mini-itx store, he (BZBOYZ) wanted "COMPLETE information about the manufacturer and model number of the mother board", (His emphasis, not mine!) in order to resolve "compatibility issues".  (Just how many flavors of 184 pin DDR RAM are there?   )  Anyway, befor I flame him & ebay I thought I'd check and see what info I could get from the forum.
Thanks in advance,
vern

Of course, it has to match your motherboard, at least in terms of size & type, but you can usually mix brands. It's probably a good idea to make sure, however, before you buy it.

Here's an ad for one that works with e-machines:

"128MB DDR333 PC2700, 184p DIMM, 2.5v, Sync, CL=2.5 - Major Brand

Your system only supports modules made with a specific type of chip. Should you find what seems to be the exact same memory elsewhere for a lower price, it is very possible that the cheaper memory will not work in your computer."

The DIMM arrived DOA.

As tested on just the mini-ITX or on any other mobo?

I'll spare you my rant about why I don't sell hardware on ebay anymore, but there are legitimate reasons sellers "drag feet" when accused of selling DOA or misidentified goods. Most sellers will work with you and go the extra mile if you have a legitimate complaint. They have a right to make sure there's a real problem first. That's not foot-dragging; that's making sure they don't get screwed over after already fulfilling their obligations under the terms of sale. Be patient and work with the seller before maligning him.

Anyway, befor I flame him & ebay...

Leave ebay out of it because they only provide means for buyers and sellers to make exchanges. You're the one who chose to use the cheapest price as your primary critierion for this purchase. Sometimes that's not the least expensive option as you may soon find out when you pay to ship stuff back and forth (unless the seller is willing to eat that cost, which he really shouldn't). No matter how pissed off you are about the experience, you chose what you bought and how you bought it. That's not ebay's problem or ebay's mistake.

roberts:  the 1GHz box here
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/store....omputer
btw,  i am new to forums like this and wonder how you hooked
the URL up to the word 'here' in your post.  i know you are a busy guy, so don't sweat it if it is too involved to explain.  thanks
lucky13:  i am working on my anger management issues. ;)   my new toy is the only thing i have to test with here.  it is exasperating that it will involve a 100 mile round trip and about half a day to get to civilization and get my diagnosis confirmed.  really screws up my feeble attempt to be thrifty.  thanks to
you also.
jpeters:  extending your argument, working on a e-machine wouldn't necessarily mean it would work on mine then?  :)
yeah i'm an idiot for going for the lowest price on the net.
if i knew i was going to have to drive to town anyway, i'ld
have just bit the bullet and bought locally and saved time & $s
at the bottom line.  i appreciate your input.
best regard to all,
vern
