What is the slow on the front of the fanless mini-itx barebones computer for?

It looks like it is connected to a compact flash reader.  Is that what it is?  It isn't listed in the description.  If not, what is it?

It is actually a smart media card readers, and that is an option for the barebones.  I didn't order them with that option.  It added significantly to the  per unit cost, and I don't know it is bootable.  If I get the one I have here to boot that way I will order some with this option.
