Instructions for saving your settings in DSL Live CD version on Floppy disk!
(For users that use DSL on a computer that needs a boot floppy to access their CD drive in older machines)

1. You'll need 2 floppy disks.
(a) Floppy with boot image written to it.
(b) Blank dos formatted floppy disk

2. From scratch, boot DSL with boot floppy and DSL Live CD.

3. Alter your .filetool.lst file per instructions in the Dillo browser and set up your OS.

4. Insert the Blank dos formatted disk.

5. Mount the floppy drive by using the control panel on the lower right hand side of the screen. Use the little arrow keys to select Floppy and click on the icon so that the light is on.

6. Right click on your desktop, scroll to System and over to click Backup-Restore.

7. In the box type fd0 (Your floppy drive) and click backup. The backup file "backup.tar.gz" will be written to your blank floppy with 1.44meg of space of which you can do plenty!

8. When finished, shut down the system and leave the floppy in. If you change the floppy to your boot floppy before you shut down, it will automatically write another "backup.tar.gz" file onto it and destroy it because there will not be enough memory on it to write.

9. You've saved your settings!

Booting up and restoring your settings.

1. Insert Boot floppy disk and start boot-up.

2. When you hit the DSL Logo with startup options, select F2. Another screen will pop-up with your startup options.

3. In the command line at the bottom of the screen type  dsl restore=fd0  and click enter on your keyboard.

4. Watch the screen carefully. When you see that the CD drive is activating and is starting to install Knoppix, exchange the boot floppy with the other floppy that has the backup.tar.gz file on it.

5. Almost there!   When DSL is all booted up, right click on your desktop, scroll to System and over to click Backup-Restore. In the box type fd0 (Your floppy drive) and click restore.

6. Your settings are restored!

I am brand new to DSL (Linux) and can't believe that I figured this thing out. Took me two days! Hope this info helps all the newbies like myself that have had problems saving their settings.

Thanks A Million!

My system is all set-up. Now all I have to do is wait a few more days for my Hardware Modem to come in the mail and I will be "In Like Flint"!
