All of your changes get saved to a file called backup.tar.gz Where are you saving that file? If you are opening the Backup/Restore button in the DSL panel and just clicking the button then the file are going to the default /tmp directory which is just temporary. You need to change that directory to something permanent, like a pendrive, or a FAT or Linux formatted hard drive partition, or something that will store the file. Also, what version of DSL are you using, because the latest versions prompt you to save when you shut down.
