I wasn't sure where to post this so if it needs to be moved pls do so?

I want a tutorial on how to use SSH thats fairly easy to understand.  My goal is to be able to let my g/f in texas be able to contact my little server & d/l files from it using a winxp client, and for me to be able to do the same on my LAN.  I really don't know where to start looking for this kind of information other than google and I hoped someone here might be able to recommend a tutorial so I don't have to slog through a million webpages to find a good one.  I will do that if no one can suggest anything but thought I'd try my luck here first.

Did this just for you Aveline.
(well, anyone who needs it actually, but you prompted me to do it. thanks)

It's a little something about FTP through SSH. Sounds like what you are after. This is not real detailed, but it'll get you pointed in the right direction.

Go to the DSL Wiki and click what looks like this below:

Aveline, I presume you want to run DSL as an SSH server.

I'd not do that.
I'd go with a standard Debian minimal install with full iptables and automated updates (on HD drive).

On a standard Debian install 'man sshd' would give you a clue on how to run a ssh server.
However, if you are not very experienced I'd not go and run a ssh server like that, I'd try and test it locally, do some tests with intrusion detection tools, etc.

I speak out of my own experience, maybe I'm too paranoid

All my machines, except the dsl one, are behind 2 routers so I'm not too worried about poking holes in the router connected to the net (directly).  I understand the paranoia but I feel reasonably secure b/c if the dsl machine is compromised, they still need to get through the 2nd router to get to my LAN proper.  Yes I do want to run an ssh server on the dsl machine.  I'll have to look at Greens article a bit more in depth when I have a few minutes (Ty Green :D).
