Hi,

strange strange...

another question in order to invalide another hypothesis: do you enter the "install"-command (the big I) in apsfilter after choosing the path and before printing a test page? I know from my own experience that it is always something that one can easily forget.

Otherwise, we have to assume that there is a problem with the usb port or your machine or the usb cable, but probably not with your usb-printer, which should work fine with apsfilter or cups, and which should work fine with DSL, too, since DSL install usb-printers well, as I experienced with other usb-printers running the pxlmono.

Do you have the possibility to plug a lpt cable in your printer in order to configure it on /dev/lpt/lp0?

I think you can test before installing, but in any event, it can't find a device either way. It DID  work with a parallel port cable I got from another computer using the GIMP driver, and I was able to print a test page both from apsfilter and CUPS. I wasn't able to print from any apps in either case, as the printer setup didn't include the loaded driver (I tried OO and Beaver).

strange strange strange...

in order to control the possible issue with your usb port, I would plug a usb-stick (once at boot and once when DSL is running) in order to check if dsl recognizes it and mount/unmount it without problem. If yes, then it is not your machine, and then I have no other solution...

It's really surprising to me, because I'm using a samsung usb-printer with an hp driver and apsfilter, and everything is fine. I checked also the linuxprint.org and forums for solution, but only can find that your printer should work with linux (lots of users saying it works fine, etc.). So, we have to bring it to work, too.

The USB ports work fine for attaching memory sticks, external hard drives, etc.
Any clue why apps didn't print even after cups was loaded and printing out test pages successfully on the parallel port?

... very sorry not to be able to help you more than that.

all my apps print fine (on lp and not lpr or lp0), xpdf, ooo, beaver, etc. in parallel or usb mode, and I have a 10 years old machine.

My opinion is still that you have a hardware problem, but where if not the usb port???
