Yo,

I've tried installing a few mydsl extensions. One (xchat) works, a couple (mplayer, nvu) icons show up on desktop but apps don't launch, and one (realplayer) downloaded, but icon doesn't display and app doesn't launch at commandline -- I don't get any response to 'which realplayer'

I recently got dsl working, this layout:

/dev/hda1 -- installed image
/dev/hda2 -- swap
/dev/hda3 -- home/, opt/ mydsl/

these grub boot options:
quiet vga=normal noacpi noapm noscsi frugal dma toram home=hda3 opt=hda3 mydsl=hda3/mydsl host=minitux

I used the mydsl gui widget, clicking the MyDSL icon on the desktop, clicking down to the someapplication.info selection, then clicking the install button. I saw no error messages in that interface (there might be some other place to check, please let me know if that's the case)

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I need more details on

1. your install (I guess frugal, but then why does it appear in your boot line?)
2. hardware (CPU&RAM&space on hd)
3. exact apps loaded (xchat is in the base .iso; did you load another one?)

yours
z

Hello z,

1. Yes, my install is a frugal install. I put frugal in the grub boot line after seeing it that way in various examples. If I don't need it, I'll take it out.
2. Hardware:
-- VIA EPIA MII6000 Mini-ITX Mobo,
-- Processor  VIA 600 MHz,
-- 1 x Transcend PC2100 / DDR266 memory  512 MB,
-- Samsung SpinPoint P Series 120 GB Hard drive
-- /dev/hda1 300 MB
-- /dev/hda2 1024 swap
-- /dev/hda3 ~118 GB
3. Apps. I only have the base installation, plus the four mydsl extensions that I tried to install: MPlayer, xchat, Nvu, realplayer.

I did not think xchat was in the base .iso. I saw it in the mydsl extensions when I was browsing around in there, and so went ahead and downloaded and installed.

Apps also usually appear on the DSL Main menu (Right click on an empty part of your desktop).

They should appear under the MYDSL submenu

For NVU, it is a GTK2 application, which means that you need to download the GTK2 extension and then activate it from the Right-Click menu.  Otherwise, NVU will not work.

The INFO file associated with this extension should tell you if you need to install any dependencies or other special instructions in order to get the extension to work.

Hi,
you are right, xchat is not in the base iso, sorry.
I also think that it is a problem with gtk2. Just download it from repository, run it, update it, and all should be fine
