When insert audio driver modules into the kernel (modprobe command) all mixer channels are muted by default. You must use a native mixer program to unmute appropriate channels, for example alsamixer from the alsa-utils package. In Xterminal:
alsamixer
Then from keyboard: The Left and right arrow keys are used to select the channel while 'M' key toggles muting for the current channel
