I'm running 4.3 now.

Aesthetics: This is *really* way dark and the wallpaper is a bit noisy for transparent terminals. I concede the buttons take up too much space. I've changed to a smaller font (edit theme's tray and tasklist sections to 10 from 12) and removed the icons (jaapz: the tray is 28) to get a little more space back.

My biggest complaints are related to firefox. The size difference between 2.0 and current 2.0.0.14 probably isn't too drastic, especially considering the severity of the interim security updates.

One thing irritates me more than anything else: the search engines have been stripped so that the only one available is a Google search that runs first through the DSL site. I can appreciate John wants to maximize his Google click through revenue. Does John get a list of all the searches passing through the site and is there a privacy policy? How will this affect users given the number of times DSL has been down or severely delayed the past week? DSL goes down, searching Google through DSL doesn't work? And why should users have to go to Firefox add-ons to re-enable normal search engines? Bad idea, imo. At least that will be gone when I add the 2.0.0.14 version of Bon Echo to my DSL home partition and start with a clean profile.

Screenshot of my tray changes and unflattering comments on the choice of routing Google searches through damnsmalllinux.org:

(im sure the default tray is 38, ill check tomorow)

I do like the black theme, and i think it does fit DSL in the way of h4x0rs, if u know what i mean.
And anyway, thats the costomizing left to the user, like u said before ;)

I think ur right about the search-engine thingy. The DSL search just sucks. I am quite sure that John wont see any of our searches at all (i tried this stuff too on my site) but i dont like this anyway. All those ads everywhere, it just sucks...

With 4.3 and the new Firefox do I need a new flashplayer plugin?.
Have been using Flash7 with previous releases.

I'm positive it's not 38 because I did a clean frugal install (CD-less at that) and that was the first thing I checked once I had it set up. Unless there's a difference between the default .jwmrc-tray and the one in /etc/skel that I copied over.

As far as 'h4xors' go, poseurs and profilers and wannabes are the ones compelled to do things in certain ways for the sake of style rather than substance. Dark backgrounds and themes don't give you any bad-@$$ computing cred anymore than wearing dark clothes and having a funny haircut will make you a vamp or goth.

Shades of grey from black to white can work if done sensibly. I ended up changing the background to a pleasant gradient and my aterm foreground to a color I could see without my eyes frying. I think it should be the other way around: let the 'h4x0rs' set up vile, illegible dark themes on their own rather than by default. DSL should be use-able by default. It always has been. Profile as a 'h4x0r' on your own time. ;)

substantive note...
Robert: I saw some .old files in /etc. I didn't pay close attention and had to get back to work. I think one was for modules.conf?
