I have an older laptop that requires fbdev instead of vesa.  I can boot and run from the CD, perform hd install (grub), but when the laptop boots from the hd, the last line display (before the screen goes black) is using vesa default.  Is there a way to change this to fbdev?

I don't have an HD install, but looking at the live CD you could try to edit .xserverrc in your home directory.

Thanks for the tip.  I was going down the same path but modified xsetup.sh after using the install to hd option (not the frugal install).  I can now boot from the hd, login as dsl and then use the startx command to start fluxbox.

Again, thanks for the suggestion!

Great! (actually xsetup.sh creates .xserverrc.)
