Most, if not all, of your questions are answered either on the main damnsmalllinux.org page or in the wiki.
Quote | Easy to install or difficult? |
Easiest install I've ever seen. Some users will have to do some work after the installation because of unsupported or troublesome hardware, but personally i haven't had any installation issues....it took only a few minutes to install frugal, and mere seconds to upgrade.
Neither. DSL gives you the choice of either Fluxbox or Joe's Window Manager in the base, with the option of adding more window managers using the myDSL system.
Quote | What kind of applications does it have? Are they all purely open source/ free software or are there also proprietary applications there? |
The base DSL distribution is 100% open source. There are a few (maybe 2 or 3?...opera and nvidia, anyway) proprietary user-made myDSL packages available.
Quote | What range of applications does it have, e.g.office suit, photo manipulation, Apache server? Dose it have more than one application for some purposes, e.g. two word processing programmes. |
See the main page, and the "notes" page for changes since the main page was updated.
Quote | Are the applications up to date?e.g Open Office 2.0 vs Open office 1.0 |
Some are, some are not. Depending on the requirements and size of the application, some have not been updated. In these cases an update is not really necessary anyway...newer doesn't always mean better. Open Office is not part of DSL. Any additional applications you want can be added with either myDSL or Debian packages.
Quote | How important are at forums to linux users in particular? |
In my 4 years of Linux experience, online forums have been the *most* important part of the learning process.
