First off, the machine I'm installing to is a Compaq Armada 1700 with a 733mb HDD, 266mhz PII, and 32 megs of EDO ram. This is going to be installed into my car, and the single USB port is going to mean the few dozen lazy 2gb-10gb laptop HDDs I've collected are going to be coupled with IDE to USB cables and replace my CD collection. Aside from that, I think it's time I learned how to use Linux after over a decade and a half of computer experience.
Yes, I realize that power consumption would be less by simply building one of those DIY hardware MP3 players or buying a premade MP3 player and modding it to use detachable HDDs, but I have tons of spare older laptops and not the money to buy even a cheap player. Maybe I'll swap it out when I can afford to. Anyway...
The BIOS was on a partition on the HDD, but since it was a useless BIOS anyway that only let me view statistics and not actually change any USEFUL settings it's gone now. I started with a totally raw HDD, no partitions or anything. I've tried again and again to make a partition and put the necessary files on it via IDE to USB'ing the drive and using XP Virtual CD to extract from the .iso, but every time I toss in the boot disk and type "install" it hangs at "Initializing RT netlink socket."
And no, I have no network access because of physical damage to ports (well, except the USB port).
I've used the search function a few times as I've been an avid forum goer for over a decade now and howl about it when people repost. I've viewed a ton of different threads. Initially I was just going to lurk and find what I needed and be gone, but all of the instructions I've found either skip things that a regular Linux would know or give instructions that only the same type of user would understand.
If you can't tell, I know jack about Linux except that I'm interested in it, esp. Damn Small because of the intended application. I'm sick of Windows bloatware and having to do tens of hours of registry work simply to get that damnable OS to operate how it should in the first place and not constantly bother me. I want to use an OS that I can work with rather than against. Ever since the phaseout of DOS began I've been increasingly unhappy.
So I've once again removed all partitions from the HDD and have "the boot disk" in my hand, and I'm ready to receive any help or flames anyone has to offer.
