Hi,
I'm new to Linux and i'm trying to install DSL(poorman's method-boot from floppy, iso from HD) on my IBM aptiva, pI 150Mhz,48Mb RAM and a 2Gb HardDisk. My problem comes when the install process stops critically with a message like 'bad EIP value, Kernel panic attemp to kill init' (¡!). I've been lookin' around about the issue, and I've found out that it's a matter of PCI and ISA cards, so I unplugged them from the board, but... the problem persists! I also read that there are some 'patches' or 'fixes' that you can apply for the installation (addin' something to the kernel, I guess...) but no idea on how to do it. The last clue I've got is that PnP cards aren't liked by kernel 2.4 and later, something about PnPBIOS or something like that, so I turn unavailable all memory resources for Plug'N'Play devices in my BIOS in order to keep the BIOS from managing them freely... and problem's still there...
PLEASE, HELP ME!

Can you turn plug-n-play OFF from inside your laptop's BIOS?

Otherwise, maybe some of these boot codes can help:

http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html#ss3.4

Pay attention to stuff like the "noisapnp" code

Also, sometimes manually specifying the memory can help:

dsl mem=48M

or

lowram mem=48M

or

failsafe mem=48M

Note that "mem" is lowercase and the "M" at the end is UPPERCASE

Thnks a lot, it seemed to work! I read the link you posted about bootng parameters (very usefull) and used the following ones:
boot: dsl noisapnp nofxsr pci=off mem=46M
I also changed an IDE HD local bus feature into my BIOS (donno remember exactly what, so if someone have the same problem, just try)
Thnks again
