Is there any way to create a HD install that is as "bullet proof" as the CD?  I need the ability to power off without shut down for a picture frame I'm trying to build.  If I power off now .XAuthority is locked after fsck, requiring another power cycle (since there is no keyboard) to get the system back up and running.

Booting from CD all the time isn't really an option due to the noise (and space within the frame).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lester

Try the "frugal install".

It is basically running from a hard drive copy of the CDROM read-only filesystem, but with a bootloader like lilo or grub.
