One of my big disappointments with DSL HD installs is that apt-get ends up being so broken. I know about the various ways of restoring it, and have been using these since 0.4.something. So it's not like I don't know ways are provided. Problem is, after you do a HD install and then try apt-get(ing) things, you quickly find out that Debian's nice package management system is broken beyond repair on a DSL HD install. You just can't install (or uninstall) certain things using apt. Which of course means that, to do things like this, you have to abandon the package management system and compile from source or dpkg -i stuff manually. Which means you get dependency problems. Which means the nice package management system is broken. This post is just a last gasp effort to see if maybe there aren't some basic steps to get the package management system back into working order. Of course it will never work absolutely like Debian's apt because certain packages are just not in the Debian repositories (e.g., Xvesa). But I'm hoping a far better semblance than what currently obtains is possible. Input on getting apt working much better on HD installs?

Thanks, James
