hey
i copied knoppix\* from ISO into c:\knoppix\* (without LOST+FOUND and index.htm)
on partition C is win95 (FAT32)
i have no cd rom/usb/eth0 in this laptop
i copied DSL files by LPT1;)
i write bootfloppy.img into diskiette by rawwrite
i started laptop with this floppy disk
in "boot" prompt, i typed "install"
(and also... when i try "2" or just enter on boot screen... i have the same thing...):

...
Segmentation fault
Done.
Starting init process.
<6>Freeing unused kernel memory: 140k freed
INIT: version 2.78-knoppix booting
INIT: No inittab file found
INIT: Entering runlevel: 2 (when i boot with "2", otherwise it asks me for runlevel)
INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel

and eveything is freezed.
there is only prompt on the end of this message, but i cant write anything there...

my laptop is: Toshiba P 100 MHz 16 MB RAM 1 MB integrated SVGA graphic chip (with external monitor, i can use display with 24 bit of colours)
LCD is 800x600 with 256 colours only

i installed DSL on desktop P 100 MHz with 16 MB but with CD-ROM, 2 MB SVGA + 3DFX and works fine!
i dont know why on my laptop are problems?
i cant run just a BASH...
why?

Try making sure the filenames and directory named copied over are all uppercase letters, IE:

c:\KNOPPIX\KNOPPIX

Also, try booting with this command (all on one line at boot prompt):

Code Sample
dsl 1 vga=normal atapicd noideraid nosound noapic noacpi acpi=off noscsi noapm nousb nopcmcia nofirewire noagp nomce mem=16M

The

mem=16M

is the important one.  "mem" is lowercase and the "M" at the end is uppercase.

hey
he see image anyway, because of line:
"accessing dsl image at /dev/hda1"

i typed full line in the prompt like you said... and...
i'm in text mode =)

i have following error messages now:
mount: cant find /ramdisk in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
pcilib: cannot open /proc/bus/pci
lspci: cannot find any working access method.

ok, i did installation from /usr/sbin/dsl-hdinstall
why it needs at least 200 mb of space?
i have only 115 mb on partition hda2
DSL needs 50 mb, but installation needs more for temporary files?
is there any way, to change place for installation temporary files?
like for example my patition with win95 in FAT?
and how much free space i need for these files?

i will extend my laptop up to 40 mb soon =)

If your laptop doesn't have a PCI bus, then those error messages are expected.

DSL is 50MB as a read-only compressed filesystem.

When you do a traditional HD install, it copies the files to a traditional (uncompressed) linux filesystem, so it takes up more space... around 200MB or so.

One way to solve the problem is to shrink down your Win95 partition with a program like "parted" and then create a decent-sized linux partition.  If you are tight on space, I would do this:

300 MB Linux Partition (a small amount of extra room for expansion and for storage of user's documents and other files)
64 MB Linux Swap Partition
Rest for Win95

Or for smallest space usage:
200 GB Linux partition (minimal expansion room)
Rest for Win95
64 MB Linux "DOS swapfile" that is created as a file that sits inside your Win95 partition

oh, so DSL is compressed... now i understand everything.
ideas with dos swap file on fat partition and changing partition size by tool caled parted, without losting any files are great!

thnx for info! =)
