I did not do a frugal install to hd and I am using grub...
I previously tried the host=xxxx option on the boot line, with no results...

also, I tried changing the hostname in /etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig, which works (kinda), but then I can't sudo su to become root...it gives me an error message like "cannot lookup host via gethostbyname( )" (or something along those lines)...had to drop to runlevel 2 to fix it.

finally, tried changing hostname in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts, but to no effect...

For a traditional hard install you not only need to change:
/etc/hostname
/etc/hosts

But then as root run
hostname --file /etc/hostname

Also, depending on your hardware, editing out some of those "no" options like (for me) nodma, noscsi and noacpi might give you a bit more functionality. And editing off "frugal" at the end.

Since I do all kinds of strange and bizarre, while and at the same time weird in an odd yet vaguely disturbing sort of way... hardware configurations, tweaks and add ons, anything less than full functionality would be almost a toy.

To get a good idea, when you are installing hit f2 and look at the list.
