Ok, I'll try to be as brief as possible with out skipping over anything critical.
* Linux NooB, never really touched it
* PC literate, I'm a compitent Windows / DOS user, so I can handle technical stuff, but I'm new to Linux

I've set up three partitions on the HD
hda1 - boot, primary, linux, 100MB
hda5 - logical, linux swap, 224MB
hda3 - primary, linux, the rest of the HD (over 2GB)

I can't get the PCMCIA CD drive to work with the boot disks, so I made a DSL USB thumbdrive, but need to use the USB bootdisk, since the laptop can't boot from USB.

I can get DSL to launch this way, but when I try to install to HD (hda1) it says "Cannot open: No such file or directory" for almost every file, then when it gets to the mkdirs at the end of the install, it says "No space left on device"

I can't get grub to install either, gzip says... no space, crc error, and incorrect length. Then "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock, on /dev/loop0, or too many mounted file systems".

So my main issue is, am I trying to install to the wrong partition? Am I missunderstanding something rather obvious and basic? I'm sure someone with experience can help me out pretty easily, so please, will someone set the noob straight?

Thanks guys,
