i have an old thinkpad that i just installed dsl onto.
the problem is that when i just now installed it to my hd
and rebooted, it tells me to enter my root password,
this wouldnt normally be a problem except that i cannot
type anything. my keyboard seems to have locked up for no
reason. my keyboard worked all through installation until
now. i went through this already and shut down unwarned. figuring i screwed something up, i completly reinstalled. my laptop is on the "enter new password" screen right now. any ideas?
thanks
p.s. im a newb

Hi,
which installation? hd install or frugal? which hardware spec.?

I guess, (but still just guessing) that for some reason, DSL won't start in x.

There is then maybe a problem with the supported screen resolution of your hardware. Check the boot line in order to be sure to have 'noacpi' in it.

Another possibility is that you create a user account without specifying the rights and group of appartenance of the new user. So that DSL waits for the right login and the right passwd in order to start x.

I hope it might help you.

i can boot from floppy or without but i recieve the message:

XIO:   fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X
        server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (o known processed) with 0 events
        remaining.

...im pretty sure i did a normal hdinstall (i never saw a frugal option) and i never set any hardware specifications. I did see "noacpi" and i did try making a new user without adding a pwd or group or anything.
am i doomed to reinstall?
thanks for the help

Hi,
I can't figure out the errors, but I would like to install DSL again and this time, make a frugal install (Apps-->tool-->frugal install-->frugal grub). Before you make a new install, just format and repartition your hd with cfdisk (at the prompt of DSL, type init 2; then at the other prompt, type cfdisk). More help on this in the posts of the forum and in the wiki.
