First tip

The wiki has some helpful information.

Second tip

There is some documentation at the DSL download site that is helpful.

Third tip

Search the forums for helpful info.  Read the WIKI page on the "Search Function" because the forum search doesn't work like GOOGLE and is unhelpful if you don't use it correctly.

Fourth tip

It's good to post more information about your setup like the Computer Make/Model or better yet the video card.

well .. the question isnt "how" , its rather "what" ...
i know how to search for things ... but as it is now .. i really dont know where to begin:-/

sadly i dont know what video card... its a strange onboard graphics card.
but it seems the 16 colors might be because ive got low Vram ... by lowering the resolution ive fixed this.

its a 666mHz p2 with 256 MB ram atleast...

You can get the details of your graphics card from the output of lspci -v

Suggest posting the details of your graphics card, someone might know what to do with it.

Or is this what you want - it helps to be very specific with questions. To set your display settings:

1. Quit x to the terminal (that is, do cntrl-alt-backspace)

2. Type xsetup.sh and hit return. This will enable you to set up your mouse, color depth, resolution etc.

3. When finished configuring X, type xinit to return to start up the graphical interface again.

These settings will be saved automatically in your backup tarball so you won't have to so you won't have to do this everytime.
