I've gotten DSL to instill without a hitch on my 686, but when I go to myDSL and attempt to download a package, I get the message: 'non DSL user error."
The download is set to /root (I'm running as root user), and the download mirror is set to the ibiblio ftp site.
Does anybody have any idea why this error occurs?

I guess I just answered my own questions. Seems you must be logged in with a "dsl" user to install new packages.

It is because the scripts that do the loading only allow the user dsl to add mydsl apps.  This is because DSL is designed to be a liveCD type OS and only the dsl user is used.  If you log in as dsl you can install the apps.

Also, using any unix/linux you should never run as root (unless there is an emergency or something).  You should try to login as another user and use sudo or su to run things as root on an as needed basis.

Just to let you know that loading mydsl apps on an HD install (regular HD install not frugal) will install the software permanently.  If you decide that you don't want that installed you would need make the changes manually to get things back the way they were.  On a regular HD install there is no load/unload only install (if you are using apt to install then you can unistall the ones installed with apt but not other software).
