Hi, Everyone,

I'm installing DSL on my old Acernote laptop P120 16MB RAM 1GB HDD (floppy only).  You can see my other post in the Laptops forum.

Anyway, I'm trying to do a dsl-hdinstall to the hda2 partition and have run into problems.  Here is what I see printed on screen before being dropped back to the command line:
----------------------------------
Continue (y/..)? y
Creating filesystem ext2 on /dev/hda2...
/usr/sbin/dsl-hdinstall: line 88: /tmp/hdinst.tmp.956: No such file or directory
An error occurred while creating the filesystem.
Some messages from mkfs:
tail: /tmp/hdinst.tmp.956: No such file or directory
tail: no files
bash-2.05b#
-----------------------------------
Not pretty, is it?

I have 3 partitions on my 1GB disk:

hda1: holds Win98, about 700MB
hda2: formatted for linux 83, about 235MB
hda3: formatted for linux 83, about 64MB (currently holding current.iso)

The system recognizes hda3 as the cdrom and can read it just fine.  Any ideas?

One more detail....

The install script sets the TMP variable as "/tmp/hdinst.tmp.$$", but the /tmp/ directory appears to be a symbolic link to /ramdisk/tmp.  The problem is that, in /ramdisk/, there is no /tmp/.  I am operating off the boot floppy created during the frugal_lite.sh install script.

Well, I've gotten further simply by creating the /ramdisk/tmp directory myself and running the dsl-hdinstall script.  Because the directory is now there, the script can create the file it wants.

What I don't understand is why the boot floppy wasn't able to create the /ramdisk/tmp directory in the first place....

Anyway, I'll keep you informed of the progress.

Progress is halting, but continuing...

The next stumbling block was the grub/lilo script, which insisted on the target partition being mounted at /mnt/hd.  I manually mounted the partion and reran the script, and it seemed to work.  Now, I get a grub menu prior to boot, and can choose DSL with various graphics options preferable to laptops.  I chose 800x600 and went through the various initial questions about my keyboard, mouse, etc. until I was eventually kicked back to the command line with these messages:

Loading /usr/share/keymaps/i386/qwerty/us.kmap.gz
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

root@tty1[root]#

It's progress.... but any advice would be welcome, and I hope this post ends up being useful for anyone else wrangling with the scripts.

Ciao,

Hi, All,

I want to consolidate this thread with another one.  From here, please follow my progress at this posting subject:

DSL newbie install on P166 fails

The other poster (DiSmaL) has been having similar problems, and I think our situations are similar.  View my comments and updates on the other thread.

Thanks,
