Haven't yet seen if you've had success ... any luck?
I recently got a VAIO "without an OS," and the hard drive was locked/crashed. I put in a new HD and dropped the old one a few times (literally). They both work now, though I can't trust the original one
If you're still having no luck, perhaps download/burn a GParted LiveCD and boot that up. It will tell you what your partitions are, and it will let you repartition things. Don't just go making space any old place, though - read up first.
If you like, I've put up a mini-post on the DSL Blogs on doing a HD Install to my VAIO z505sx. Hope this helps!
