Hi, I'm a very new user.  I liked the live CD, so I installed DSL on an old laptop with the goal of getting it setup as a wireless websurfing machine.  To get my wireless working, it seems I need to compile code for the wireless adapter driver.  The problem is that I don't have a compiler.  How can I get gcc or something like that?  I've heard mention of gcc1.dsl.  Is this what I want? I've been looking for a spot to download it for a couple hours and can't find it.  Any help would be appreciated.

gcc1.dsl and gcc1-with-libs.dsl (more headers included) are both available through MyDSL.  I would use caution when installing myDSL on an uncompressed harddrive install, mainly because there is no undoing the install apart from manually removing (and possibly replacing) files. If you installed frugal it will behave the same as a livecd.

G'Day,

I'm doing the same thing, trying to compile the latest ndiswrapper and wireless driver.  I got gcc, gnu-utils, kernel headers etc., mydsl packages. When I try make install in ndiswrapper source it just says "Error: cc command not found".  I assume this is the compiler.

Anyone know what's up, is there some other mydsl package I need to compile sources?  Reading the info with gcc package it says that it includes everything I need.

Cheers,
Wittfella

Did you ./configure ? It should set up all the flags for you...

If it doesn't, you can still manually symlink cc to gcc in /usr/bin

Thanks for the help,  the symlink cc to gcc worked ok.

Now when I try to compile ndiswrapper-1.24 it brings up heaps of warnings and a few errors.  At the very top it says I should be using gcc-3.4.

No problem, off I go to synaptic.....but the latest gcc listed there is 3.3 something or other.

No problem, i'll just try to compile the linux wireless driver and maybe won't need ndiswrapper.....but I get about 637000 warnings/errors that I don't understand.

No problem, I'll just stick with the original ndiswrapper and try some other drivers.....but the original ndiswrapper got uninstalled when attempting to compile the newer one only a couple of minutes before.

No problem, just go to mydsl and grab it again.....but ndiswrapper is not listed in mydsl packages.

No problem, back to synaptic to get anything remotely resembling ndiswrapper.....but its not listed at all!

Aaaahhhhhh.....brain.....hurts.....resist.....urge.....smash.....laptop.....concrete..... :(
