Hi. I love DSL. I've been using DSL 2.2 on an old 100 MHz, 16 MB RAM laptop. I saw that there's a 3.0.1 and decided to upgrade.
I do, however think there is a bug in the installer (poorman method), or that the 3.0.1 version just doesn't like my laptop (which I would understand perfectly well, I don't think to much of it either).
Due to lack of the cd-boot option, I had to use a special method to install. I have a working (though slow) Win98 partition on hda1, on that partition I leave the syslinux Knoppix archive in hda1 root.
Then I prepare a ext2 partition and a swap partition (ext2) and shut down.
Then I boot up on a bootfloppy and I go to the install menu. I type 3: install on hard drive.
It asks me where I want to install - hda5 If I want multi-user - no And if I'm sure - yes very sure.
This process works fine on syslinux 2.2 (and I was very happy first time I made it). And from here the 2.2 version just starts to install DSL from the image on hda1. But... On 3.0.1 the process crashes here. Just after answering yes I'm sure, it just returns to the install menu.
Anyone else experienced something similar?
I havn't tried the versions in between, but I think I'm going to give 2.4 a go, and if that works, maybe also 3.0 (though I suspect that 3.0 wont work either).
Lars. I thank heaven for DSL though.
