I just installed DSL, (frugal Grub).

Celeron 733Mhz
Onboard Intel Video
256MB RAM
4x CD-R

I right-click on desktop and scroll to enable apt, then I clicked on Synaptic. Synaptic installs itself. When I try to install any package (wine, for example) I can select it then click on install and proceed, it seems to go through the motions, but the package never actually installs.
What am I doing wrong?

Check the errors/warnings?
Typically, some packages can't be installed straight out of debian's repositories.

And wine is in MyDSL - always check there first.

MyDSL....thats a shortcut icon on the desktop is I remember correctly (at work right now).
Ok, I will check there, thank yoU!

As for errors/warnings, I am not sure where to look for them. When  installing wine, the terminal behind synaptic seems to go throught the motions and says 'done'. afterward, perhaps I shoud scrutinize the output more thoroughly?

You also indicated that some packages cannot be installed straight from deb repos...what is the reason for this and/or the correct protocol for installing such packages so next time I can avoid this error?

Maybe it did install... did you check? Usually when no error is given, it is fine.

The reason for it is on the wiki: http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Apt-get

Although some will work and some will not - apt-get is only really recommended for "traditional" hd-installs.

When you say "traditional installs" are you referring to anything other than DSL as a whole, or is there another option besides the "Frugal/GRUB" HD install for DSL which will allow more complete use of apt?
