I'm trying (and failing) to do the "debian-type" install ... don't know enough about linux to diagnose what's going wrong.  Here's the thing:
 hda1 FAT32 (Win98)
 hda2 linux swap (64 MB)
 hda3 ext2 (350 MB)

No cdrom in this junker, but I've got a copy of the CD image on hda1 and boot it with the bootfloppy (fromhd=/dev/hda1) ... so far so good ... then I select "install to hd" from the Apps menu, and tell it to install to hda3 ... it formats okay and writes the files, but then things start to go bad
Quote
Setting up /home/dsl/
Tar: Removing leading ‘/’ from member names
/cdrom/KNOPPIX/boot.img: No such file or directory
cp:  cannot stat ‘/mnt/bootimg/linux24’: No such file or directory
umount: /mnt/bootimg: not mounted

At this point it asks if I want to install a bootloader (yes):
Quote
/cdrom/KNOPPIX/boot.img: No such file or directory
gzip: /mnt/l1/minirt24.gz: No such file or directory
umount: /mnt/l1: not mounted
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, or too many mounted file systems
umount: /mnt/l1: not mounted

Next question is which bootloader (grub), and then it says it's time to reboot ... but, of course, grub fails to boot DSL.
Any suggestions for the noob?

Talk about weird synchronicity...

All of the install scripts currently do not support installation from Poormans via Bootfloppy. Which is what you are attemping to do.

Usually, I have little to do with Windows. So this has not been a priority. But just today, I started to add Poorman's Bootfloppy  from a Windows98 install to support all of the install scripts, frugal_install (lilo), frugal_grub, and hard drive install both lilo and grub options.

This is targeted for the next RC, dsl-3.1RC3.

You may want to wait for these automated scripts. Otherwise, you will have to try to duplicate the boot directory and files onto the Windows root directory.

Someone did do a writeup on this sort of thing. You can find it here
